A MUM-of-two who has been fighting for her life after collapsing in Poland has finally been told she is coming home after 20 days.

Kayleigh Newton, 30, was on a short break with her husband Liam Newton and was due to return on Friday, March 18 when she suddenly fell ill.

Kayleigh, who lives in Blackburn, started to feel ill at the hotel the night before she was set to travel but thought it was just a stomach bug so shrugged it off.

After arriving at John Paul II Krakow-Balice Airport, Kayleigh collapsed and when she woke up, she could not hear or see properly.

She was rushed to a Krakow military hospital where she has now been for 20 days.

After weeks of trying to get their daughter back to England, Anna and Shaun Haggart found out yesterday (April 5) an air ambulance is being sent in the next few days to bring her back.

Anna said: “She is finally coming home and that is where she needs to be.

“We are so ecstatic. Tuesday was such a hard day and we felt like we were getting nowhere.

“She is still recovering; she cannot speak and she can’t hear at all but she is has been a little brighter and she is using a whiteboard to communicate with us.”

After her admission to the hospital, Kayleigh was put into a coma and diagnosed with meningitis, sepsis, MRSA and pneumonia.

Attempts to take her off a ventilator were unsuccessful but on March 30, Kayleigh regained consciousness and started to show signs of improvement.

Every day she has continued to improve but she is still completely deaf and requires around the clock medical care.

It is unclear at this stage how well Kayleigh will recover, but Anna is hopeful that she will do well after she has been told the blood clot in her brain has now reduced in size.

Anna added: “We want to thank the people of Blackburn who have been so supportive in trying to get Kayleigh home.

“So many people have been helping us out including councillors and MPs and my cousin Charlotte Knowles who has done everything in her power to get her home.”

Anna said she is not sure where Kayleigh will be admitted when she returns to England at this stage but is just thankful that wherever it is, it will be in the country.

A fundraiser set up when she fell ill has raised over £7000 and the funds will be used to support Kayleigh’s recovery.

The British Embassy will be visiting the Krakow hospital today to see Kayleigh and the family.
