FAMILIES on a budget can bag the cheapest home on the market that’s big enough for the kids for just under £50,000.

A three-bed home in Kilmarnock, Scotland, is the cheapest family-sized home listed on property portal Zoopla – and it comes with a garden.

It’s nearly £224,000 below the average house price which stands at £273,762, according to the latest Land Registry figures.

It also comes with a lounge, kitchen and bathroom too.

A garden runs around the front and back of the property, which means there’s plenty of room for the kids to play.

Kilmarnock is a half-hour drive away from Glasgow, so close to the big shops.

At £49,995, you’ll need £4,999 saved up to put down a 10% deposit.

But before you splash out, you’ll need to factor in the cost of doing it up.

Some of the rooms – especially the bedrooms and kitchen – are in need of some work.

There is paint on the kitchen worktops and the flooring looks uneven.

While in the bedrooms, the wooden floorboards are bare and also covered in paint, and the door has come off in one of the rooms.

You should get a home survey report done as well before taking the plunge and buying it.

Depending on what survey you get, it will show any potential problems with the house – and how much it costs to fix.

You can get a condition report done, which costs at least £300 – its a traffic light report indicating the conditions of various states of the property.

There’s also a Home Buyers report, which costs at least £450 and you’ll also get a valuation and  insurance reinstatement value – which is an estimate of how much you’ll receive if the building were to burn down.

A building survey costs £500 or more, and it is an extensive check of the state of the property – it will also provide advice on repairs, estimated costs and timings, and what will happen if you don’t carry out the repairs.

Fail to get one sorted and rush into buying a home without one and you could end up paying tens of thousands of pounds more to fix the issues – like this first-time buyer did.
