When it came to reimagining a Midwest couple’s second home in Sausalito, CA, Heather K. Bernstein was given free rein. The husband, a lawyer, told the San Francisco–based designer that they had bought purchased the property as an investment, and so they could spend more time with their three adult children, two of whom live in California. “I did the math on seeing my kids,” she recalls him saying, “so I bought this house.”
But despite the home’s ideal location, its interiors were incredibly dated (read: shag carpeting, vinyl flooring, and yellow cabinetry). “I didn’t know how to fix it,” he told Bernstein. Luckily, the designer and her team had plenty of ideas—such as turning a closet into a bathroom.
“He and his children love it,” says Bernstein. “This is their happy place.” And now, the family spends more time together than ever.

Dining Room
Since the room has impeccable views—“on top of the world, looking down on Sausalito”—Bernstein wanted a “simple space.” She added her signature with fabrics and an updated fireplace, creating “an intimate space for them to enjoy each other’s company.”

Kitchen
Everyone inevitably gravitates toward the kitchen. “It was dowdy and not inviting,” reveals Bernstein—“but there’s nothing a great coat of paint can’t fix.”

Breakfast Nook
Showcasing stunning views overlooking the bay, the cozy space has plentiful natural light, which made it easy to design.

Office
The third bedroom was transformed into an office that’s “open and airy, with several chairs for conversation.”

Primary Bedroom
Down the first set of stairs, this room had views that weren’t being taken proper advantage of. To that end, Bernstein turned a closet into a nook for the bed that faces the bay, hung pendants overhead, and added mirrors to reflect the water.

Guest Bedroom
Since it functions as a guest room for various family members who will be spending most of their waking hours socializing in larger groups, the decoration is functional by design.
