Steve and Dianna Simpson are both retired educators. Steve was a school administrator and principal for 49 plus years at local schools including White Station High School, Hernando High School and Briarcrest. In fact, Steve was the real-life principal portrayed in the movie “The Blind Side” as the one who recommended Michael Oher be admitted to the school.

The couple had previously lived in Bartlett and most recently in Collierville, but they decided it was time for them to look at a property that offered them a more casual lifestyle. “We had a beautiful home in Collierville, but we decided that it was time for us to look at property that was less demanding,” explained Steve. “We had a large corner lot, massive trees, and a pool that was only a nice decoration and not used. The thought of a new home with less maintenance was a driving force for us as we considered a move.”

Dianna added, “We wanted a new home with four bedrooms and at least three baths, a two-car garage, and an open floor plan. Prior to moving we had looked at several residential developments in and around Collierville, focusing on new construction and low-maintenance features. Actually, we had reserved a lot in another development and just couldn’t get comfortable with the floor plan options that were offered.”

“One day we were riding around in our car, driving through the Villages at Porter Farms and ran into Jerry Lucius, an agent with Marx-Bensdorf Realtors,” recalled Steve. “Jerry was riding around the neighborhood on his golf cart and had stopped to talk to a couple in front of a model home. Ironically, the couple were long-time friends of ours and we stopped and joined in the conversation. We were excited to learn that the model home was for sale. It was everything that we had desired. We signed a contract to purchase it the next day. Jerry put our existing home on the market within the week.”

Dianna said, “We had gone to our place at Pickwick for the weekend and the listing for our home was posted on a Saturday morning. Jerry called at noon and said we might want to come home since he had received multiple offers and expected more. We came home and accepted an offer and the rest is history. It was important to us not to have to move into a temporary residence between the sale of our home and our new purchase. Before you know it, we were moving from our previous Collierville home into a new build.”

The Simpsons said that Jerry Lucius made the entire experience very pleasant for them. “He was the epitome of an experienced and knowledgeable real estate professional,” explained Dianna. “Very early in the process we developed a sense of trust in Jerry’s ability to navigate the sale of our previous home and our new home purchase. We now consider him to be a good friend.”

The Simpsons have been in their new house for just more than a year.

“We particularly love that our new home is mainly a one-story floor plan, with just a bedroom/bath upstairs for guests,” said Dianna. “This house has much less upkeep than what we were dealing with in our previous home.”

The Simpsons paid $515,000 for their new home, with almost 3,000 square feet of living space. The modern Craftsman style abode has four bedrooms and 3½ bathrooms.

“This home has an open floor plan that we find very appealing,” said Steve. “And we appreciate the maintenance-free exterior constructed of brick and hardy board. The lighting is all LED, and the floors are hardwood and tile throughout. The kitchen has a gas range/oven as well as an electric oven, and stainless steel appliances. There’s a separate laundry room with an abundance of cabinets, and a mudroom/office with a granite top desk and plenty of cabinets. Plus, there’s a large walk-in attic, and a double garage with epoxy floor. This home differs from our previous home in that it has a small lot, the HOA takes care of outside maintenance and irrigation, and we do not have to maintain a pool. The only planned change is that we may do additional landscaping.”

“We like the neighborhood because it is quiet, and close both to the Collierville Square and other local shopping,” said Dianna. “And the area omprises retirees and near-retirees. In fact, several of Steve’s contemporaries from his days working at area high schools, live nearby.
