Protesters stand on the intersection of Michigan Street and Ottawa Avenue in support of abortion rights after the leaked draft opinion by the Supreme Court overturning Roe v. Wade Tuesday, May 3, 2022, outside of Gerald R. Ford Federal Building in downtown Grand Rapids.

The potential overturning of Roe v. Wade has sparked outcry and debate across the country, including right here in Monroe County.

On Wednesday, The Monroe News posted a poll on its Facebook page asking readers to weigh in on the possibility that the U.S. Supreme Court could overturn the 1973 ruling and leave the question of the legality of abortion in the hands of individual state governments.

This topic was sparked by the unprecedented leak of a draft opinion from the court that would strike down the law. The Supreme Court has vowed to investigate the leak, as groups on both sides of the issue continue protests nationwide.

There were over 70 responses to the poll, and comments appeared to be fairly evenly divided between those who want to see the ruling overturned and those who want it to stay.

“Supreme Court doesn’t make laws!” wrote Audrey Carmichael. “This is a states right!”

“My thoughts are, it’s my body, it’s my choice and no one has a right to tell me what I can or cannot do with it,” wrote Nicole Gross. “As a legal adult, no one should be able to say one thing about any medical choices I make. Period.”

Many of those who responded to the poll who made it clear they are against abortion argued that those who support it are being hypocritical if they also supported mask and vaccine mandates during the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

Others argued that abortions are unnecessary due to the varied types of birth control available.

“Too many birth control options out there,” wrote Karen Jones. “Use them.”

However, there is a belief among many legal and medical experts that the undoing of Roe v. Wade could, at the very least, make access to contraceptives much more difficult as connected federal legislation is unraveled. Others note that the law provides an option to victims of rape or incest, not just those in consensual relationships.

“As long as the pregnancy is CARRIED WITHIN SOMEONE ELSES BODY, it is THEIR choice,” wrote Patricia Longan.

But others argued that abortion is simply another word for murder.

“Stop murdering innocent babies,” wrote Jeff Jones. “The blood is on their hands. Judgement will fall upon these baby killers unless they repent.”

“Making abortion illegal won’t stop people “murdering innocent babies”,” replied Travis Wooley. “It will just make the process significantly more dangerous and cause the death of more mothers.”
