All six members of the Knox News All-PrepXtra high school boys basketball first team are nominees for player of the year. The winner will be announced at the Knoxville High School Sports Awards presented by Farm Bureau Health Plans in the spring. More details about the program coming soon.

First team

Elijah Bredwood

Bearden, Sr.

Why chosen: The Lincoln Memorial signee was named a 4A Mr. Basketball finalist and helped lead Bearden to the state championship game. He averaged 17.1 points, 4.3 rebounds and two steals.

Blue Cain

Knoxville Catholic, Jr.

Why chosen: Cain averaged 19.7 points, 5.7 rebounds and 2.8 steals. He helped lead Catholic to the Division II-AA state championship game and was named to the all-state tournament team.

BJ Edwards

Knoxville Catholic, Sr.

Why chosen: The Tennessee signee helped lead Catholic to the Division II-AA state championship game and was named to the all-state tournament team. He averaged 20.3 points, 7.9 rebounds, 5.3 assists and 3.2 steals.

Ja’Kobi Gillespie

Greeneville, Sr.

Why chosen: The Belmont signee led Greeneville to a second consecutive state championship and was named the Class 3A state tournament MVP. He averaged 27.3 points, 4.9 rebounds and three steals.

Trey Morrow

Scott, Sr.

Why chosen: The Bryan College commitment averaged 30.8 points, 10.1 rebounds, three steals and 1.5 blocks. He finished his career with 3,094 points, becoming the 22nd player in state history to surpass 3,000 points.

Micah Simpson

Morristown East, Sr.

Why chosen: Simpson surpassed 2,000 career points and broke Morristown East’s all-time scoring record, averaging 24.6 points, 4.5 assists, four rebounds and three steals. He was named the District 2-4A regular season and tournament MVP.
