While sunny weather puts a smile on all of our faces, there’s one thing that can quickly dampen our spirits – and that’s ants.
The pests begin to emerge as soon as the temperature starts warming up and will build nests, so you’ll need to act fast if you want to get rid of them in your house and garden.

But if you don’t know where to start, then no fear.
Mark Smithson, CEO of nationwide electrical appliance experts, has spoken to The Express and revealed the best ways to get rid of them.
And the good news is, you’ve probably already got the products in your kitchen cupboards.
First up, he notes that salt is a common product homeowners used to get rid of the pests.
“Table salt is fine and you can mix in a good amount of hot water and using a spray bottle, cover any entry points around the kitchen and home,” he recommended.
Mark goes on to recommend peppermint as a great deterrent, because ants dislike the smell of it.

“You can grab peppermint oil from most homeware stores and pharmacies,” Mark advised.
“Mix around 10 to 15 drops into a mug of water, or if adding to a spray bottle like the salt water, you can spray this in problem areas – and repeat regularly.”
The expert says that any foods containing peppermint will also work if you have nothing else in the cupboards and need a quick solution.
Alternatively, he suggests spraying powdered chalk around the entrance.
“Due to containing calcium carbonate, chalk is a good item to use in preventing ants around the kitchen,” he said.
Lastly, Mark recommends lemons as a great way to get rid of ants because they don’t like bitter smells so will ensure they keep away.
“Again, once the entry point is identified, grab some lemon peel and place it there.
